Photograph includes information about how Grantha-Tamil scripts were developed from 3rd C. B. C. Photograph has total 16 columns out of which first and last keys corresponds to the Roman and Devanagari script which comprises 41 alphabets in vertical order. Remaining 14 columns shows how each alphabet has developed from different dynasties. The 14 columns gives an idea about how Grantha-Tamil alphabets, from “Aa” to “Ha” developed from 3rd c. B.C. To 15th c. A.D. Grantha scripts has developed from the period of “Ashoka 3rd cent.B.C”, “Tamil caves 3rd B.C c. B.C”, “and Tamil caves c. 5th B.C.”, “Sunga 2nd c. B. C”, “Satavahana 2nd c. A.D”, “Pallava 7th c. A.D”, “Pallava 8th c. A.D”, “Cola 11th c. A.D”, “Pandya 13th c. A. D”, “Vijayanagara 15th c. A.D”. Tamil alphabets evolved from “ Pallava 7th c. A.D”, Pallava 8th c. A. GRANTHA LIPI is a modified form of Tamil alphabet to write Sanskrit in Tamil. The Sanskrit word "grantham" means a book ( in Tamil a "NOOL"). So grantha script ia a modified form of Tamil script to write Sanskrit granthas. Grantha has no literature of any sorts. It just helps Tamilian priests to pronounce the Sanskrit slokas using correct sound. Grantha alphabet, writing system of southern India developed in the 5th century ad and still in use. The earliest inscriptions in Grantha, dating from the 5th–6th century ad, are on copper plates from the kingdom of the Pallavas (near modern Madras). The form of the alphabet used in these inscriptions, classified as Early Grantha, is seen primarily on copper plates and stone monuments. Middle Grantha, the form of the script used from the mid-7th to the end of the 8th century, is also known from inscriptions on copper and stone. The earliest known Tamil inscriptions date back to at least 500 BC. The oldest literary text in Tamil, Tolkāppiyam, was composed around 200 BC. The Tamil alphabet is is thought to have evolved from the Brahmi script, though some scholars believe that its origins go back to the Indus script. |
